Central Garden & Pet (Walnut Creek, Calif.) reported net sales of $476 million for the second quarter of 2009, down 2 percent from the year-earlier period, and a net income of $33 million versus $20.4 million in the year-earlier period. Net sales for the pet products segment were $229 million in the quarter, down 1 percent from the year-earlier period. GroomTeam USA will send a five-person team to the fourth World Team Championships, to be held Sept. 19-20 in conjunction with German Grooming Masters 2009 at the Sport Center ASV in Dachau, Germany. The team competition, presented by the European Grooming Association, allows team members to compete in four classes: purebred scissoring, spaniel and setter, hand stripping and poodle. LegalizeFerrets.org, a California nonprofit organization, is asking owners of the critters to send in their Petco receipts in a bid to legalize Musteo putorius furo. The organization wants to show how much money ferret owners spend in Petco stores to bolster a request it is making of Petco Animal Supplies Inc. (San Diego) to help fund an environmental impact report. The California Department of Fish and Game is requiring the study before it will consider legalizing ferrets. [August 2009 PET AGE]

MAINE—Pet Food Tax. A proposal to increase the sales tax on pet food from 5 percent to 6 percent was voted down in the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry even though legislators initially approved the increase. The failed tax hike—tacked onto LD 964, a breeder kennel law—would have helped fund the state’s animal welfare program. [August 2009 PET AGE]

MASSACHUSETTS—Groomer Licensing. A proposal to regulate pet groomers remained in the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure at press time. Senate Bill 186 would create a five-member Board of Registration of Pet Groomers, which would be responsible for issuing licenses, setting standards and prescribing rules. Similar legislation failed in 2007. [August 2009 PET AGE]

Pawsible Marketing, an arm of May Marketing Inc. (Carmel, Ind.), now offers a marketing coaching service package geared toward small and medium-sized pet businesses. [August 2009 PET AGE]

The fourth annual Presents 4 Pets collection drive to help local shelters and rescue groups, sponsored by the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (Mount Laurel, N.J.), runs through Nov. 7. Nestlé Purina PetCare Co. (St. Louis) partnered with AOL L.L.C. (New York) to launch the pet-centric PawNation.com. The site features celebrity pet news as well as user polls. In a recent poll, 49 percent of respondents said they think pet weddings are absurd; nearly half (48 percent) said pets sleep in the owners’ beds; and 44 percent said they spend less than $50 a month on their pets. Nestlé Purina PetCare (St. Louis) partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure (Dallas) to raise money for breast cancer research. The fundraising effort—projected to total more than $200,000 for 2009—includes limited-edition pink packaging of some Purina Cat Chow products, which will appear in on store shelves in October. The third annual Purina Pro Plan Rally Across America Tour, sponsored by Nestle Purina PetCare Co. (St. Louis), made a stop in Irvine, Calif., in June to raise money for Orange County pet rescue organizations. OREGON—Exotic Animals. A bill that requires a permit to possess certain exotic animals awaited the signature of Gov. Ted Kulongoski at press time. Senate Bill 391 also restricts sales of primates, bears and other named species to wildlife rehabilitation centers and U.S. Department of Agriculture-licensed facilities. In addition, it bans the breeding of such exotic animals, except for “small exotic felines.” [August 2009 PET AGE]

Esser donated wines and Weruva, a pet food manufacturer based in Natick, Mass., donated human-style pet food dinners.

Pet Supermarket (Sunrise, Fla.) worked with rescue groups to find homes for 1,974 cats in the past year, with more than 800 of the adoptions originating in the chain’s Broward County, Fla. stores.

PetRelocation.com, based in Austin, Texas, was named 14th Best Small Business to Work for by the Austin Business Journal. PetSmart Inc. (Phoenix) reported net income of $46.3 million for the first quarter of 2009, an increase of more than 1 percent from the year-earlier period. Net sales were $1.33 billion in the quarter, up 9.5 percent from the year-earlier period. Comparable store sales increased 3.9 percent. The Maine Adoption Leaders Team, whose members include Portland-based Planet Dog and Happy Tails, helped create a specialty state license plate to highlight animal welfare. The “Act to Create the Support Animal Welfare Registration Plate” was signed into law by Gov. John Baldacci in May. License plate proceeds will be divided evenly between animal cruelty and abuse investigations and “Help Fix ME,” the state’s spay and neuter program for pets of low-income citizens. WISCONSIN—Dog Sales. Two bills introduced to regulate dog sales that would set forth licensing requirements and standards of care awaited committee hearings at press time. Assembly Bill 250 and Senate Bill 208 would require licensing of persons who sell 25 or more dogs in a year, persons who operate a dog breeding facility that sells 25 or more dogs a year and persons who operate an auction at which 50 ore more dogs are sold or offered for sale in a year. The bills also would regulate animal shelters. [August 2009 PET AGE]

The World Wide Pet Industry Association Inc. (Monrovia, Calif.) and North American Pet Products (Corona, Calif.) will sponsor the Pet Store Super Makeover contest at SuperZoo, Sept. 15-17 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
