Vet Techs Win Sue Busch Memorial Awards
Four veterinary technicians who have devoted significant time and energy to the health and welfare of companion animals were named as recipients of the 2004 Sue J. Busch Memorial Awards, administered by The Pet Care Trust (Quilcene, Wash.).
The following individuals each received $250 awards:
- Holly McCormack of Purdue University (West Lafayette, Ind.). At an early age, she trained golden retrievers for field work, obedience, tracking and conformation. She completed animal-related 4-H Club projects for 10 years, volunteered at Bally State University to support wild birds, and every Saturday of college participated in meetings with kids interacting with companion animals. She hopes to work in a private veterinary practice, and continue working with 4-H and dog breed clubs.
- Amy Krohn of Michigan State University (East Lansing, Mich.). During high school and college, she worked with Seeing Eye dogs at local veterinary clinics. While volunteering at an animal foundation, she also rescued and fostered countless companion animals and wildlife. She plans to work in a private veterinary clinic.
- De Anna Dedard of Athens Technical College (Athens, Ga.). She has worked at an emergency veterinary clinic as well as volunteered at rabies clinics, humane societies and spay days at her school. She has experience with dogs, cats, rabbits, mice, amphibians and other species. She plans to work in a private veterinary clinic.
- Amanda Graf of Brevard Community College (Cocoa, Fla.). She has been employed at ranches, veterinary hospitals, animal-control facilities and an animal vaccine company. Additionally, she has volunteered for the Animal Protection League, Deaf-Blind Social Group, human hospitals, search dog programs, humane societies, disaster relief for domestic animals and wildlife, and Greyhound Pets of America.
The scholarship awards commemorate the late Sue J. Busch, former president of H.H. Backer Associates Inc. (Chicago), which publishes PET AGE magazine and produces two pet industry trade shows. Busch served on The Pet Care Trust's board of trustees from its inception until her death in 1994.
