Pet Pampering Sweeps Nation
Women would rather pamper their pets than their human partners,
according to a survey of 901 pet owners by Shopzilla (Los Angeles),
an Internet shopping search engine that has seen an increase
in the number of searches for luxury pet products.
No wonder women like to spoil their pets: 56 percent of the
female respondents said their pets are more affectionate than
their partners, and 45 percent said their pets are cuter than
their partners.
According to the survey, women have deeper emotional connections
with their pets than men do. Nearly all women respondents
(99 percent) said they frequently talk to their pets, and
93 percent believe their pets communicate with them. Furthermore,
70 percent said that their pet reflects their personality
“very much” or “moderately.”
Female respondents spend $50 to $100 per month on various
goods and services, including all-natural dog food, sweaters,
diamond-studded collars, booties, doggy day care, dog ophthalmologists
and spas.
With more and more dog-friendly establishments popping up
around the country, 36 percent of women take their pets on
errands such as shopping or going to the beauty salon.
According to Shopzilla, which offers more than 4,000 pet
products, most pet-related searches pertain to dog products.
The most searched-for pet products at Shopzilla include doghouses,
dog fences and dog clothes. [June 2005 PET AGE]
