Top Cat Writers Honored
For the second time in three years, Steve Dale’s “My
Pet World” column won the Friskies Publication of the
Year Award in the annual writing competition held by the Cat
Writers’ Association (Mesa, Ariz.).
Dozens of other writers and artists whose work appeared in
newspapers, magazines, club publications and books picked
up awards during the CWA banquet last November.
Amy D. Shojai won the largest number of awards: the Hartz
Everyday Chewable Vitamins Award and the Merial Human-Animal
Bond Award for her book “Complete Care for Your Aging
Cat” (New American Library, New York); the Petmate Safe
Cat Award for her article “Avoiding a Cat-astrophe”
(The Herald-Democrat, Sherman, Texas); a Muse Medallion for
best newspaper column for “P’Etiquette”
(The Herald-Democrat); and the Purina Cat Chow Nutrition Award
for her article “A Weighty Problem” (Healthy Pet).
Joan Lowell Smith won the Hartz Nurse-Maid Award for the
best entry about rescue kittens for her article “Program
with a Purr-puss” (The Star-Ledger, Newark, N.J.).
Dusty Rainbolt won the Iams Responsible Cat Ownership Award
for the best entry about pet owner responsibility for her
book Kittens for Dummies (John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken,
N.J.).
Betsy Stowe won the World’s Best Cat Litter-ary Award,
consisting of $500 and a commemorative pewter bowl, for her
book, Calico Tales and Others (Infinity Publishing, West Conshohocken,
Pa.).
Nancy Marano won the Sticky Paws Training Award for her article
“Feline Athletes in Action” (Catnip, Somerville,
Mass.).
Beth Adelman won a Muse Medallion for best training/behavior
book as well as the Tidy Cats Feline Behavior Award for her
book Every Cat’s Survival Guide to Living with a Neurotic
Owner (Barnes & Noble Books, New York).
Louise Holton won the CWA President’s Award for her
book “Veterinary Care: Guidelines for Veterinarians
Treating Feral Cats” (Alley Cat Rescue, Mount Rainier
Md.).
Eva and Ron Stob won the Fort Dodge/Responsible Healthcare
for Pets Award, honoring the best published work by a beginning
cat writer or photographer, for “A Cat Called Canoe”
(Raven Cove Publishing, Greenback, Tenn.)
Steve Dale won the Shojai Mentor Award, honoring the CWA
member who has had a direct, positive influence on another’s
